Ultraviolet Weathering Performance of Torque-Tight® Lug Nut Safety Indicators

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — July 3, 2026 — Torque-Tight LLC, maker of the Skid-Stopper trailer brake indicator and a full line of visual lug nut safety indicators, today announced results from an independent 500-hour ultraviolet weathering study conducted by Element Materials Technology, an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing laboratory.

The study, performed under ASTM G154-23 Cycle 1 with visual evaluations every 96 hours, measured color retention and material integrity using the AATCC gray-scale standard, where a score of 5.0 indicates no visible change. At 500 hours, Torque-Tight's black lug nut indicator and Skid-Stopper UHMW-PE flag material each scored a full 5.0. The orange and green indicators scored 4.5, having held a perfect 5.0 through 480 hours. No cracking, chalking, or embrittlement was observed on any Torque-Tight specimen throughout the study. By comparison, a leading imported indicator commonly used in the same application showed pronounced color change under identical test conditions.

Torque-Tight's lug nut indicators seat directly over the lug nut for at-a-glance detection of a loose fastener during routine inspections, and are available in sizes from 13/16" to 38mm. The company's standard line is manufactured in the United States and meets Buy America requirements for federally funded transit procurement. The company's Skid-Stopper indicator uses the same UHMW-PE material tested in this study, attaching to a wheel stud to give drivers a visible signal in the mirror when a trailer brake is dragging or frozen.
